I had to change my modem last year, and bought a talk talk modem from the recycle-it list. AS I am not a talk talk customer and therefore not neediing the software supplied, I was able to get it to work by typing in a particular url and following a set up procedure. My point here is, will this procedure work regardless of the particular modem, because if the anser is yes, there would be no need for anyone to install software supplied by isps when joining up. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tristram Llewellyn" <tristram.llewellyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

My views on ISPs that require you to install software to use their service are similar to Dave's. I have also had Plusnet and since they do not require specific software there is no problem runinng a mixed network of PCs and Macs as I do and all it takes to get on the internet from PC/Mac out of the box is to connect it to the router, that is it! I have not had any problems at home. If you have a router or plan to buy your own then there should be no problem there. From time to time the router looses the connection but that is not totally unusual and sometimes it is just the router gone into one.

Since they introduced the broadband your way the package is quite realistic, option 2 is a good middle of the road £14.99 with quite reasonable 15GB monthly cap. Option 1 for just under a tenner a month (1GB monthly cap) would be fine if someone was a light surfer and a bit of email.

Some of the teething problems experienced by Plusnet users were down to local difficulties of local loop unbundling and some of the 8MB connections. They should be all gone now.

Regards.

hi, sounds like both BT and AOL try to make you install extra software. I
would not go for either personally for that reason.

Plusnet doesn't make you install any software. Everything can be managed on
the internet and is very accessible, the help line is a landline number, but
the online help is good, and they are very good at sorting problems out if
they do occur. I've only ever had line related problems and they were pretty
firm with the engineers about getting it sorted, and now it's fantastic. My
particular modem does need resetting from time to time but that is done by
unplugging the power from the back of it then plugging it back in again, or
again, you can do it through internet explorer. As the modem has an http
interface, you get all your line readings, speed, technical data etc to be
able to trouble shoot any problems.

I get 15 gig of downloads, which is loads, for £15 a month. The website is
www.plus.net

Cheers
Dave

Hi Chris. I'm on BT Broadband unlimited downloads package and I have a
wireless Hub. I joined in December and have not had a single problem. I
have
had sighted help to install the software which is not really necessary to
have because I've uninstalled the extras. If you have a Broadband related
problem it is free for you to ring up and have a customer rep to help you
with your query. They will also use remote access to solve your issues as
a
final resort. I've only had to reset my hub once in the last 6 months
which
was only last week/. The BT team talked me through a trouble shooting
exercise and my problem with not being able to connect to the internet was
solved instantly. They were even prepared to send a technician out to
examine the line without charging me for the call out. There are cheaper
providers out there than BT but I don't think the level of customer
service
would be as good. This definitely matters when you are helpless to solve
the
problem yourself.
