Steve, I don't know for sure, but I think with the new IPhones they may have fixed these issues. I know the first gen models were crap as you indicated, but I think that might have been fixed now.
Like most phones, first gen handsets often have problems. Look at the terrible N95 for example, a product which even Nokia admits had many faults. They sure fixed a lot of them with the N95 8GB though didn't they!

Hi Barbara,I don't know about that, but the iPhone is, as Matt says a media player that just happens to be a phone, and a pretty poor one. It only supports 3G, and not HSDPA, battery life is poor, but the real kicker for me is that you can only have one device connected by Bluetooth at once. So you couldn't have aheadset and a Braille display for example, even if it supported Braille.
