you do have to ask the question though, do you really need your phone to do all this stuff? lol. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt Brown" <matthew_brown@xxxxxxx>

But as I have said time and time again, the N97, although it does have a touch screen, has a full and accessible qwerty keyboard, navigation pad, enter key, backspace etc. The only things I could not do when I had it in my hand in the Nokia store were exit out of something or answer/end a call. Using the navpad I was able to move up, down, left and right in exactly the same way one would with the navpad on the N82 for instance, and I could press the centre of the navpad to select/enter. The backspace key does what it says, deletes characters or numbers when editing text, deletes text messages, contacts and so on.

So, everything can be done from the keyboard, and with a bit of tinkering around, Nuance could disable the standard touch screen functionality and enable gestures like double-tap with two fingers to answer or end a call, finger swipe to the left to back out of menus or aps, finger swipe to the right to get the time, finger swipe up to get battery status etc. In fact the touch screen in combination with the qwerty keyboard would make the N97 more powerful than any other phone in existence for blind users because of the endless possibilities for gesture access available.

The IPhone can accept 1, 2 or 3 quick taps from 1, 2 or 3 fingers simultaneously, has compass-point finger swipe recognition and can even accept a circular motion which is used to turn volume up and down, move backwards and forwards through tracks or a song etc. I believe the N97's screen has similar capabilities so just think what you could do with a combination of all those movements plus the full keyboard as well! For example, you could access the main menu with say, a triple 1 finger tap, then use your left hand to move up and down through the list of items and a quick finger swipe to the right on the touch screen to dip in to a submenu! Suddenly you have multiple-dimension navigation available.

I seriously think Nuance would be very foolish to ignore the N97. Its powerful, has huge storage capacity, voice recognition, FM transmitter, Bluetooth, multiple ways to navigate the interface including all the possibilities the touch screen could offer if utilised correctly etc. Oh I really hope someone from Nuance is reading this thread!

T-mobile is going to be offering the N97, and despite the fact there's no support for it right now, I'm certainly going to get one because its the loveliest phone I've ever held in my hand - you know when a phone just feels right, and its so very powerful as well. I'm almost certain that if Nuance doesn't role out support for it, Codefactory almost certainly will as they're already offering access to touch screen handsets with their Pocket software, as are Dolphin I believe.

Hi Matt,

I didn't write they would not, I did write that they wer not at the time I
wrote it. Whether they are now, I don't know, but they are certainly not
ruling it out for ever as far as I know. Touch screens are tricky and you
have to get the interface right, or it is clumsy.

All the best

Steve, you yourself wrote in a message that Nuance would not develop for the

N97 because it is a 5th addition phone and that they would be waiting for
more such phones to come out in the future. You also mentioned the touch
screen as a reason why they wouldn't.

I based my comments on what you wrote, and as a licensed distributer of the talks product with a direct line to Nuance, I would assume you would be in a

position to know.

Hi Matt,

So you know that Nuance are not developing for the N97 do you? That's more
than I know, and probably not true.

Well Steve, at the moment, I think talks is in danger of falling behind
the
times with access, so I'd say anything that offers an alternative is
encouraging, even if it isn't perfect yet. Even Mobile speak is way ahead
of

talks now as far as supported handsets go! I'm getting increasingly
worried
about the fact that Nokia seem to be bringing out an ever increasing
number
of touch screen handsets like the new and fantastic N97, but Nuance in
their

wisdom does not feel the N97 is worth developing support for! I think
that's

total bunk! Its the most amazing phone I've ever seen, with a completely
accessible qwerty keyboard that's nicely laid out and easy to navigate,
great sound, nice comfortable shape, very powerful multi-media features, a massive 32 GB harddrive for all those audio books we blinks love to store
on

our phones which can be increased to 48 GB with a 16 GB micro SD card,
good
camera, GPS, and many more features, but Nuance isn't interested! I'm very
disappointed to say the least, because that phone rips the IPhone to
pieces,

but because its 5th addition and has a touch screen, Nuance doesn't want
to
know, despite the fact that Nuance could jiggle with the OS to make the
touch screen completely redundant very easily. In fact, almost everything
can be done from the keyboard already, navigation, text and number entry
etc. The only things you can't do are answer or end a call and exit out of
submenus or aps. However those things are very easily fixed!

So as the World moves towards touch phones, I for one am very interested
in
anything that makes touch screens accessible. No I may not rush out
tomorrow

and buy an IPhone, but I'm watching and listening with interest never the
less, because Nokia is moving in that direction too.

In fact, I really hope there are some Nuance people on this list or that
someone will pass this along because I think its very important they look
seriously at the N97 and come up with something pretty quickly to enable
us
to use it. Its the next major step for us phonewise, far more powerful
than
anything else Nokia plans to release for the foreseeable future (and that
includes the N86).

Hi Darren,

Why does it make it more interesting for the adaptive tech industry?
Let's
see, you can't easily buy it other than on O2. You can't easily buy it
unlocked. Unless you have a contract, it costs a fortune. The battery
life
is poor. The podcast client doesn't even let you download podcasts over
the
air. In fact I would say it's a pretty poor phone, and I haven't even
seen
it.

Long live Talks!

All the best

Steve

Yup voice over is working and I know someone who uses it and they can't
sing it's prazes enough. Very accessible I'm hearing. That should make
things interesting for the adaptive tech industry as a whole now.

Funny enough I've just been having a discussion about this very thing.
Apparently voiceover is now ready and working on the IPhone. Apple told
me
that wouldn't happen until the end of Q3 this year, but obviously things

moved along a bit quicker. As far as I know, Talks does not work on the
IPhone.

Hi

I've heard on the grapevine that Talks now works with the I phone.
Can anyone confirm this to be true?
