[ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: memorable K-9 stories

Chantille was a very (she would have been a large male) big bitch... she was
sired by Sel Ch Landaleigh's High Tech and out of a GV Polo daughter... she
had a soft but confident temperament... she was my house dog and the constant
companion of my children but I decided to breed her to our Ch Landaleigh's
On The Mark (GV Polo x GV Trollstigen daughter). She had 9 puppies and was a
wonderful mother... the only problem for me and Chantille was that she had
to be in the whelping house away from the family. When the puppies were about
2 weeks old I heard her barking one morning at 6:00 AM at my back door... I
was still asleep and since my 13 year old daughter was getting ready for
school I asked her to go put Chantille back in the whelping house.... But
Chantille wouldn't follow Jessica.. she just continued to bark incessantly at
the
back door... I got up went to the back door where she was barking but she
still
didn't shut up and I noticed that the lock was still on the whelping house
door and the guillotine door was remained shut... when I walked out the back
door she immediately quit barking and ran back to the whelping house (it was
almost like the weight of the world had been lifted off her) I went then to
see how she had gotten out and when I opened the whelping house door the
whelping house was full of smoke and the smoke was almost down to the top of
the
whelping box.... The heat lamp had fallen down on the wooden whelping box
and the box was just beginning to flame....
Chantille had knocked the bottom sash out of the only window in the whelping
house... jumped through the window that was at LEAST 4 feet off the
floor.... all 9 puppies were fine but the smoke hadn't gotten to their level;
but in
5 more minutes the puppies and the whelping house would have been gone...
She had saved my daughter Jessica from a terrible injury or death a year
earlier but even though Chantille has been gone for 5 years now it still hurts
too much to talk about that one... maybe later...
