[ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: memorable K-9 stories

My first show dog was Baron, linebred on a Bear son, Ch. Willett's ET of
Windyridge. Baron was a large (27 1/2 inches), large boned and plush black and
tan dog with a very masculine head. One day a co-worker brought his wife over
to look at a male pup he wanted to buy. I told him the pup looked like his
sire, so they went into the back yard to meet Baron. My coworker's little 5
foot
tall wife picked up Baron's ball and he suddenly decided she was his new best
friend! She threw the ball a few times and laughed as he charged after it,
then brought it back to deposit it in her hand for another throw. After a few
times, Baron came back to find her talking to her husband. He waited a
minute, then dropped the ball at her feet and looked at her expectantly. When
there
was no response, he picked the ball up and dropped it at her feet again -
still no response. Then Baron picked up the ball, stood up and gently placed a
paw on each of her shoulders and held the ball in her face! I immediately
scolded him and a little after that they left. The next day my coworker told
me
his wife had decided she didn't want a dog that would be bigger than she was
when it grew up!
Baron's girl friend, Ricki, was just as ball crazy as he was, but she
couldn't beat him to the ball when I threw it. She finally devised a devious
scheme
- when he was returning with the ball she would run about 6 feet to the
side, squat and pretend to pee. Of course he would immediately drop the ball
and
run over to mark the spot - while he was searching the ground for the
non-existant spot, Ricki would charge past him, snatch up the ball and bring it
to me
with a victorious grin!
