Sean..the latter is what I have in mind..we have a never ending drone of
complaining that we have "no new members"..We want to increase membership...and
participation..both at a full and associate level.I fully agree that a separate
List will not solve problems..it might not even enhance discussion.it may not
work at all..but we won;'t know if we don't try something..and what we are
currently doing as far as increasing membership is not working. the separate
GSDCA list is a multi faceted idea..it gives full members some exclusiveness to
information in the PC...it should allow for open discussion about
elections...candidates and their viewpoints..National site selection..and both
positive and negative aspects of what is happening in the GSDCA. I want old and
new members to be a part of influencing the decision making process...after
all..if you have paid your dues..you have earned a right to influence change.
I want everyone to join! Again...it is the best 5.00 a month you co
uld ever spend if you love the breed! It is not up to me to implement
change.....the board and the next administration will have to make it work...if
they think the suggestions have merit..then perhaps some of them will
implemented. In essence..I would like a blending of your two points..increasing
the membership translates into more voices...more ideas..more
participants..more revenue..More revenue hopefully translates into the GSDCA
giving back to its members. C.Grainger

Christine,

I see issues with a separate list. However, in light of not being a downer
I'll keep them to myself. Go for it, try to make it work. Will that help
membership? Who knows. Try it. It seems like there are two issues being
merged into one. To me it sounds like the two issues are #1- the discussion
of PC information...... #2- increasing membership.

You mentioned earlier the people who have strong voices who arent
members....ok... so they pay their dues and join back on the list... that
doesnt change the discussions taking place. So Im confused. Is your
reasoning for making a separate list to help field PC discussions, or is it to
increase membership? I personally dont think the idea of making a list for PC
business is going to solve or make discussions any easier. It might however
help with membership. It might help get people interested in joining a
discussion of all PC members.

(again, I just dont think it will help make the discussions any different or
"manageable" than they are now.)

Sean...what you have said has already been expressed..we ARE trying to increase
the perks for membership. That is also the concept of the associate
membership...we recognize that many novice people aren't interested in
showing..but would perhaps love to support the breed at a grass roots level. In
some posts I have read that some haven't joined the GSDCA because dues are
high..well I ask you...what has the breed done for you? Are you trying to
say..that 60.00 a year is too much to support education...and promotion of the
GSD? many say "I love the breed..but 60.00 is too much for me to invest in the
breed? Everybody expects something for their "dues" why can't you look at it as
a donation for the breed you claim you love? why does there always have to be
the expectation of benefits. Unfortunately..my original post recognizes that
many need "perks" to become a member..and just supporting the breed from a
financial standpoint is not enough for many as evidenced by some of the po
sts. hence..the concept again..of the associate membership..and increasing the
benefits for full membership..again..if you are going to give perks away to
non-members..you don't have much of a marketing tool.C.Grainger

If you want my two cents.... The people who arent joining the PC are those not
heavily involved in showing... correct? The PC dues are expensive, and one of
the main benefits is the review. Well if I'm Joe Shmoe from Ohio, I'm a member
of my local club for socialization purposes and such, but I don't have a good
confirmation dog.... why would I pay any kind of fee to see any kind of wins?
Thats not my interest.

Show results don't mean anything to the novice. They don't know who the dogs
are... and unless they happen to see a picture that stands out to them.... wins
from one month to the other dont stick.

If you want more people to join.... find benefits more for the novice. I dont
know what those are... but I know of all our friends in Columbus who we try to
get involved.... whose winning what... doesnt mean very much.

Thank you for your insight...you bring up good points...yes I realize that
you can access info on other sites..but it is my understanding that even
the AKC site doesn't list sire and dam.and in many cases our show results
site offers pictures of the winners..in my opinion..this is in direct
competition with the Review..so if you want to view wins..some with
photos..join the club..either as an associate..or full member..As for
pedigrees..I wasn't able to find as in depth a site as
ours..besides..anyone usually interested in pedigree is a breeder..I think
K. Strong had an idea which was worth consideration...with every ad you run
in the Review..you get a website ad too...this would be working with the
Review..not against it...and if you want to see the website ads..join the
PC...I am not for limiting information..however..a nominal membership fee
for an associate membership would certainly be worth being able to access
good information...these are ideas in progress...all suggestions are
welcome...C.Grainger
