Yes, it is also poisonous to cats. The toxic principle is the stimulant theobromine. Dark chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate and the most toxic form is baking chocolate since it contains the most theobromine per ounce. Dogs and cats lack the enzyme needed to metabolize this compound. BTW, the scientific name for the cocoa plant is theobroma which means "food of the gods". A fitting name for this heavenly confection.
