I'm glad to know this! My sitting fee of CND610.00 includes one 16x20 print. Extra prints are 175 dollars (Canadian ...). Sure, the sky is the limit, but few people order very many. I don't care what size print they want, I charge 175. Otherwise I'd never make a 16x20! And yes, every print I sell is hand made by me on real FB photo paper that has to be soaked in those stinky chemicals that eat your flesh and give you cancer, eh?? I do call it art, and I put my name on it to prove it. It's quite routine for me to expose ten rolls of 120 film (usually Kodak TMY). Sixteen rolls would not be unusual. ... a reasonable fee which >includes a print or two that is hand crafted is not much to ask. If you look >at it in an hourly sense, I wholeheartedly agree. I wish I could get a reasonable fee, or at least a fee that is commensurate with the effort I put into the work. I do indeed make a print that is hand crafted and the very best I can do. I never farm the work out to others, and the prints I make are intended to become a family resource for future generations that might wish to know these folks. I'm tempted to call them heirlooms, but that's like calling them - dare say it?! - ART. Yes, damn it, my work IS art, and it is sold too cheap. ... >Is your product a quick print from a drug store or a finely finished work, >dare I say it, of ART? Definitely happy to hear you say it! I remain professionally silent when I am shown examples of portraiture that people have spent plenty to have made. With rare exceptions, people are sold portraits that are interpersonally inept, devoid of human expressiveness, cheaply produced on cheap materials, and technically of lower quality than acceptable. It just proves to me again that I am lacking in the ability to generate business for myself. As usual crap sells, and I can't even say out loud, but this is crap! ... Maybe we could start a series of critiques ("lit crit", not carping!) of photographers' work. Famous big-ticket photogs, I mean. As a portraitist I think I'm competent to criticize such figures as Karsh and Avedon. I'm reluctant to criticize workers who are just struggling along, not getting the big bucks or big attention. I think plenty of people on this list are competent in areas like landscape or any other. We could start with the portrait of Henry Kissinger by Karsh ... regards, --le ________________________________ Lloyd Erlick Portraits, Toronto. voice: 416-686-0326 email: portrait@xxxxxxxxxxxx net: www.heylloyd.com ________________________________ -- ============================================================================================================= To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there.
