I always thought packaged D76 used Metaborate (Kodalk) to keep
the buffering power

Somewhere I have an ancient MSDS for D-76 showing Kodalk and there was a formula for it. However, the buffering of the Kodalk version is probably no better than the Borax version and its more active for equal amounts of the two. The current packaged version is the Borax/Boric acid buffered version and has been for probably 20 years or more.
