Looks like you might have some Direct X problems.  On the other hand you say
you have problems with all the versions?  I am also on Win98SE, but use
Winamp for all my music.  I find it much better than WMP of which I use
version 6.4 for midis alone.

Just writing in to see if anyone can help with windows media...got this
message..an illegal act shutting down..when i looked at details it said..WM
Player caused an invalid page fault in module WinMM.DLL at 019fibf6633..i
have reinsstalled this like three times with different versions and they all
do the same thing you play it and freezes up..i have gone into microsoft and
went to trouble shooting and tried different things and nothing works..right
now i'm using winamp but don't play all music..have gone and selected all
but still not all things  does it play..i am running window 98se..any
ideas..Donna
