Hi Fred, The first question I have to ask is whether or not you've installed the drivers for the mainboard's chipset yet? The correct USB drivers that are specific to that mainboard are a part of that set. If not, them you're only running the ones that are suplied by XP, which are extrememly limited and prone to issues. If those are already installed, try updating them from the board's manufacturer's site. Next, do you have any networked shares mapped to this system? There is a known conflict that sometimes arises betwen USB drivers and mapped network shares. You can try running SFC (System File Checker) from a command prompt using the following syntax. Just be aware that it only restores corrupted files, not registry settings. sfc /scannow Finally (for now), have you done any reassignments of drive letters on this system? If you've changed any drive letters, it could have been enough to confuse the USB hub as to what should be assigned to the non-working sitcks. Occasionally when Windows gets confused about something, it will simply do nothing. You always have the option to go into Device Manager (Start > Run, type in devmgmt.msc & press Enter), remove all references to USB support (at the very bottom of most), reboot and let Windows reinstall all of the drivers and reg entries. Hopefully, something here will get your sticks back on the job. :O) Peace, Gman "The only dumb questions are the ones we fail to ask" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fred Ward" <fred.ward@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2008 7:39 AM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- USB Problem > Hi, > > I have a problem with my XP Pro computer and the USB drives (6 x USB 2). > > I have two Kingston DataTraveller 4GB stick drives plus two older (USB 1) > 1GB stick drives - my XP pro system will successfully read one of the 4GB > drives, but won't read the other (or the two 1GB drives).
