Don,
    The group is set to ignore/remove any attachments.  My own email client 
(OE) is set to only read and send in Text Only mode.  However, Freelists.org 
may support HTML formatting.  It's possible that Freelists' server is adding 
the lines by sending stuff out using a formatting other than Text Only. 
Assuming you're also set to only read messages in Text Only mode, open up 
one of the posts that contains all of the lines and then do an ALT+SHIFT+H 
to switch over to HTML mode for that post and see how that affects them.  If 
you're already viewing in HTML/Rich Text format, go into your Options and 
set the Read tab to Text Only to see what I usually see.
