Make up your mind Bert - can't have it both ways...
Nonsense, Craig. Just because the basic standard is the same, do not jump to
the conclusion that the phones can tune to the channels of the other carriers,
or otherwise be interoperable. When carriers pay the exorbitant sums they pay
for spectrum, they will certainly have an incentive to control how it gets used.
Sorry, but that is a very BAD assumption.
Here we go again, as Reagan famously said.
Cellular networks are deployed based on peak demand - if a cell is
approaching saturation during peak demand periods the carrier
typically adds a cell in that area. The periods of high demand are
essentially the same for all carriers in that area,
Cell users move, Craig. At any moment, there is no way to predict the ratio of
subscribers in a cell that belong to the different carriers. The situation is
as wasteful, and you "explained" nothing to change that. It's as wasteful as it
would be for OTA TV to have to transmit multiple different incompatible
standards in every market, to reach all the viewers.
I won't even get into the huge amount of spectrum wasted by the
checkerboarding of big sticks.
Old stuff, Craig. Been there done that. Cellular also checkerboards. The only
significant difference being that cellular is a point to point two-way
standard, using a cabled backhaul network for the distance coverage. So it
checkerboards on a much smaller scale. Think of big sticks as market-size
cells, and then scale up the checkerboard to regions of a country. And please
don't attempt your "hundreds of miles" argument again. Big sticks and smaller
sticks frequently use the same channel in adjacent markets. And on the much
smaller scale, cellular also has to worry about co-channel interference.
