This is an interim step based on the economics of subdividing the cable network into smaller loops. It is also being driven by the proliferation of channels on digital systems. It allows the cable company to deliver more programs to the same number of subscribers on a large loop, rather than moving to smaller loops with all of the associated costs in lighting up more fiber trunks. The routing overhead is considerable lower with this approach as opposed to routing unique bits to each home. The technology has already been proven with DBS, which maps channels to transponders dynamically, and let's the set-top keep track of where to find each service.
