Many of these receivers also are are used by basic cable subscriber to view local stations DTV offerings. In a reaction to that usage the cable companies "hide" those DTV signals in locations many channels away from their local analog offerings but a quick scan ferrets them out.

Do you have any stats on this level of usage?

If the customer subscribes to the extended basic tier it is likely that they get the HD signals as part of the package - of course this assumes the subscriber has a digital STB. The latest stats I could find suggest that about 40 million of the 64 million cable homes in 2008 had digital service.

So clearly there is a potential market for consumer to use the integrated tuners in their new HDTVs, but I suspect that most do not, nor do they use antennas.

Perhaps this is changing as more people cut the cord to the MVPDs. My daughter and here fiancee did this for a short period, and tried using an indoor antenna with little luck. As soon as the football season started they went back to digital cable.

The main question for most people is whether it is worth the effort to use an antenna to receive what is available on FOTA TV?

Craig
