There are stacks of them at both Wal-Marts at Longwood and in Parkesburg in the Philly area, as well as 3 Radio shack stores. They are still available from at least 3 online retailers that also sell indoor and outdoor antennas rf preamps.

With the tuner mandate, there is no demand for tuner boxes anymore,
therefore there is no more incentive for innovation in that direction.

You seem to be assuming that everyone is running out to buy a new TV set.

I'm not assuming that, and I'm not running out to buy a new TV set.

And even so, do these sets have "generation 10 or 11" ATSC receivers built in, or just QAM tuners?

I own 3 HDTV receivers, all with built in "generation 'olde' " ATSC tuners. I'm not using the tuners at all and they are not even connected to any kind of an antenna.

The outboard ATSC CECB I AM using is a generation 6 or possibly 7 made by Channel Master. Much better performance from this box than any of the internal ones in the sets.

So there IS a definite need for newer generation ATSC receivers that don't include a display housing them.
