     - Inexpensive sets - Reporting from the projection-TV summit last week,
Warren Communications News said Wednesday that a $999 DLP model might appear
next year. The story is no longer on their site:

     - Congress and the analog cutoff -
          - Broadcasting & Cable reported that the National Religious

          - The Senate Commerce Committee seems to be moving towards something
similar to the House Commerce Committee draft but with subsidies for receivers,
Reuters reported:

          - Senators Lieberman and McCain have introduced their own version,
called the "Save Lives Act" (Spectrum AVailability for Emergency-response and
Law-enforcement to Improve Vital Emergency Services). Their version also has a
subsidy and also, reportedly, some form of cable must-carry:

          - Warren Communications News reports a Senate hearing on June 29 will
cover both bills. The story is no longer on their site:

          - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) released new figures
based on a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation of 1057 adults May
13-16. It found 285 million TV sets of which 33.6 million get TV via antenna
(one report says "exclusively). That's less than half the figure NAB has been
using.  Here are more details:
               - 5.2 million TVs in cable households aren't on cable, and
474,000 of those are used for purposes other than off-air TV
               - "Just over" seven million TVs in satellite households are used
for off-air TV
               - 200,000 TVs in combination cable/satellite households are used
for off-air TV
               - 2.1 million "TV households" neither subscribe to cable or
satellite nor use an antenna. Hmmm.
<http://www.ce.org/press_room/press_release_detail.asp?id=10764>
          - Broadcasting & Cable reports today that the NAB is requesting
proposals from consumer-electronics manufacturers for low-cost DTT adaptors for
analog sets:

     Here's the report from Multichannel News:
<http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA608683.html?display=Breaking+News>

     - DTT reception in my apartment - Two computer cards with 5th-generation
LG chips were tested this week. With a loop antenna taped to the window,
reception was stable and reliable for most local channels and was unaffected by
movement in the room. With the antenna closer to the TV, reception was less
reliable. We did not pick up WNJN-DT, broadcasting from eight miles away in
New Jersey, which had previously been picked up.

     - July 1 -
          - CEA had asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to
eliminate the requirement for 50% of TVs between 25 and 35 inches in diagonal
to have DTT-reception circuitry as of July 1 of this year. Instead, they
offered to advance the 100% requirement for those sets from July 1 of 2006 to
March 1. The FCC took them up on the latter part. The 50% requirement remains
in two weeks, the 100% requirement is advanced to March 1, the Commission
proposes moving requirement for 100% of TVs 13-inch and larger and other
devices with TV tuners from July 1 of 2007 to no later than the end of 2006,
and it seeks comments on whether it should also apply to smaller TVs.

licensed U.S. DTT stations in the FCC's CDBS database as of June 6:

- International H/DTV news:

     - Here's a report from the European HDTV Conference in Luxembourg:
<http://www.infosat.lu/Meldungen/index.php?msgID=15554>

     - According to User Vision, UK consumers find DTT easier to use than car
seats (they also find car seats easier to use than VCRs):
<http://www.uservision.co.uk/usability_articles/usability_everyday.asp>

     - According to Ofcom's update through the first quarter, 62% of UK
households have some form of digital TV. The annualized growth rate is 17%.
Freeview DTT is in 5,059,350 households (with many having more than one
receiver). The annualized growth rate for that is 41%. There are just under
25 million households in the UK, which means the U.S. equivalent would be 22.4
million DTT households:

<http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/business/technology/11893081.htm>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 20 weeks of 2005 were down 8.4% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was down 10.5%. For the first 21 weeks, they were
down 8%, and my ten-week running average was down 8.7%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 20th week
were 73,034 units, for the 21st week 109,644, and for the first 21 weeks
1,603,200.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.2% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 20th and 21st weeks
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 84% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 21st week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: In addition to the DirecTV units at CompUSA
and Magnolia, Sony and DataVision advertised Sony DTT-receiver/PVR units.

- Ad confusions: DataVision listed TVs as being "EDTV monitor" or "HDTV
monitor" and "HDTV-Ready" while indicating they had "ATSC terrestrial tuner"
and "Digital Cable-Ready Tuner."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     The model numbers are so hard to make out in the Center City ad that I
might have gotten them wrong (but I'm pretty sure they got at least one wrong,
too).
     The Samsung 42-inch plasma TV at Computers & Electronics Warehouse is back
up to $1599. Pacific Sales' years-old Sony KP-51WS510 indicates clearly that
not all factory sales make it (quickly) to homes.
