*SAS Ankeny Scouting Trip Report*
Hello all -
Barbara, Fred, Kay and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for our Salem
Audubon birding field trip on *Tuesday, March 22nd at 8:00 a.m.* The four
of us covered nine locations around the refuge. The weather was cool with
a little mist/rain (45 degrees at the start and 47 degrees at the end). It
felt cooler than the temperature indicated. Overall it was a raptor and
duck day. During the scouting trip we identified 53 species.
Most notable identifications:
· We observed seven (7) raptors including *Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk,
Red shouldered Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel
and Peregrine Falcon. * The *Red-shouldered Hawks* we observed were
immature hawks;
· We observed 12 duck species including *Gadwall, American Wigeon,
Northern Pintail, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal,
Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Merganser, Common
Merganser and Ruddy Duck*;
· At the last stop (Rough-legged Hawk site) we observed a *Rough-legged
Hawk, *a *Common Merganser* and 30 *Great Egrets* in the field;
· Other sightings included 40 *Tree Swallows*, two *Violet-green
Swallows*, a *Sora *(heard) and 12 *Savannah Sparrows*.

at Ankeny NWR on *Tuesday, March 22nd at 8:00 a.m.* Meet at the Overlook

In addition, there is the *Exploring Raptors workshop* on *Saturday, March
26th* at *10:00 AM*. The workshop is at the ODFW Classroom located at 4034
Fairview Industrial Dr S. The cost is $10, payable at the class. We will
have short field trip to look for raptors at Fairview Wetlands after the
workshop.
