*SAS Ankeny Scouting Trip Report*
Hello all -
On Tuesday morning, Barbara, Fred and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation
for our Salem Audubon birding field trip on *Saturday, May 21st at 7:00
a.m.* The three of us covered seven locations around the refuge including
a 1.5 mile trek at Eagle Marsh. The weather was mostly clear and 46
degrees at the start and 64 degrees at the end of the scouting trip.
During the scouting trip we identified 53 species.
Most notable identifications:
- We observed our first of year YELLOW WARBLERS at Eagle Marsh and
Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. On the boardwalk we saw a pair of Yellow
Warblers;
- We saw two HORNED LARKS in the field just north of the Willow Tree
parking lot;
- There were four WOOD DUCKS on Teal and Willow Marshes which are
located just behind Eagle Marsh;
- At Pintail Marsh we saw DUNLIN (40), LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (30) and
a WESTERN SANDPIPER;
- There were 10 CLIFF SWALLOWS making nests at the Eagle Marsh kiosk;
- Observed two SWAINSON’S THRUSH at Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. We
heard one as we first entered the boardwalk then we actually saw one about
halfway up the boardwalk on the left.
A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be
at Ankeny NWR on *Saturday, May 21st at 7:00 a.m.* Meet at the Overlook
off of Ankeny Hill Road. The next SAS Shorts field trip is *Friday, May
27th at 9:00 AM* at Cascades Gateway Park. Meet in the parking lot. We
have a special trip coming up on *May 31st* at Mt. Tabor Park in Portland
which is known for the vagrants that fallout there. Meet at 8:00 AM at the
K-mart parking lot along Mission Street. (Note time change). Please join
