*SAS Ankeny NWR Scouting Trip Report*

Hello all -

Barbara, Tim, Fred, and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for our Salem
Audubon birding field trip on *Sunday, October 18th at 7:00 a.m. * The four
of us covered five locations around the refuge. Eagle Marsh was pretty dry
but Pintail Marsh had some water and was quite active. The weather was
foggy at first but the fog lifted fairly quickly. It was a cool 47 degrees
at the start and 64 degrees at the end. During the scouting trip we
identified (saw or heard) 48 species.

Most notable observations include:

· The juvenile *Snow Goose* was still at Pintail Marsh mixed in with
the *Cackling
Geese. *We saw at least 5,500 *Cackling Geese* with over half of them
being seen at Pintail Marsh. About 2,000 of the *Cackling Geese* were in
the marsh itself;

· We saw 29 *Great Egrets* at Pintail and Eagle Marshes;

· Two *Northern Harriers* including a first-year harrier that had rufous,
reddish underparts that really stood out. With a scope we could see the
curved, facial ruff like owls have;

· We heard a *Red-shouldered Hawk* call from the eastern side of Pintail
Marsh;

· There was a *Peregrine Falcon* on the east side of Pintail Marsh in one
of the snags;

· One *Lincoln’s Sparrow* was seen on the east side of Eagle Marsh near
the road;

· Two *Fox Sparrows* with one being seen in the area just to the north of
the parking lot at Eagle Marsh;

· We saw nine *Greater White-fronted Geese* in the field just west of the
railroad tracks.

A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be
at Fairview Wetlands on *Thursday, October 15th at 5:30 p.m.* Park at the
ODFW offices and meet us across the street at the wetlands. The Ankeny NWR
field trip is on *Sunday, October 18th at 7:00 a.m. * Meet at the Overlook
off of Ankeny Hill Road. Please join us if you can. *Note: *We will also
be at Eagle and Pintail Marshes on *Saturday, October 17th* as part of
National Wildlife Refuge Week from *10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m*.
