*SAS Ankeny Scouting Trip Report*
Hello all -
Today, Barbara, Fred and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for our Salem
Audubon birding field trip on *Sunday, April 17th at 7:00 a.m.* The three
of us covered two locations around the refuge including a 1.7 mile trek
around Pintail Marsh. The marshes have quite a bit of water left in them
but some areas are starting to dry up a little. The weather was decent as
it was overcast with 50 degrees at the start and 54 degrees at the end.
During the scouting trip we observed (saw or heard) 46 species.
Most notable observations:
· Two *Sandhill Cranes *flew over us at the Overlook;
· We saw 10 duck species during the scouting trip including *American
Wigeon*, *Mallard*, *Northern Pintail*, *Northern Shoveler*, *Ring-necked
Duck*, *Green-winged Teal*, *Ruddy Duck*, *Bufflehead*, *Gadwall* and *Lesser
Scaup*. *Northern Shovelers*, *Green-winged Teal* and *Bufflehead* were by
far the most numerous ducks we observed;
· We saw a *Chipping Sparrow* on the east side of Pintail Marsh;
· There was one *Bald Eagle *that flew over Pintail Marsh that upset a
lot of the water fowl;
· As far as shorebirds we observed *Greater Yellowlegs*, *Dunlin* and *Least
Sandpipers* at Pintail Marsh;
· There were lot of *Tree Swallows* but no *Violet-green* or *Barn
Swallows* observed;
· We heard three *Savannah Sparrows* around Pintail Marsh;
· We saw an *Orange-crowned Warbler* and some *Yellow-rumped Warblers*
but only heard *Common Yellowthroats*.

parking lot off of Mission St and 25th (near Jack in the Box); *2)* Ankeny
NWR on *Sunday, April 17th at 7:00 a.m.* Meet at the Overlook off of
