*SAS Ankeny NWR Scouting Trip Report*
Hello all -
Fred, Tim, Kay and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for our Salem
Audubon birding field trip on *Tuesday, June 20th at 7:00 a.m.* The four
of us covered six locations around the refuge. The weather was wet as it
rained most of the time but the temperatures were not too bad. The
temperatures ranged from 59 degrees to 61 degrees. It seemed like we were
not seeing or hearing a lot of birds but we were surprised at the end of
the scouting trip that we had identified 48 species.
Most notable identifications:
· There were six species of ducks including *Gadwall*, *Mallard*,
*Blue-winged
Teal*, *Cinnamon Teal*, *Hooded Merganser* and *Northern Shoveler*. All of
the ducks were seen at Eagle Marsh;
· A nice sighting was a pair of *Black Phoebes* on the large fallen tree
in the middle of Pintail Marsh;
· Also at Pintail Marsh we saw a pair of *Pied-billed Grebes* doing a
neat display where they floated in circles and every so often changed
directions and then faced each other before resuming their circling display;
· The only raptors were a *Red-tailed Hawk*, two *Northern Harriers* and
an *American Kestrel*;
· There were two *Yellow-breasted Chats* at Eagle Marsh with one of them
being quite vocal. The one chat was very close to us but it remained
elusive;
· We heard a *Virginia Rail* at Eagle Marsh and saw a *Spotted Sandpiper*
in the field at the second pullout along Buena Vista Rd.; We also
heard a *Willow
Flycatcher* at each of the above locations;
· Based on past experience we were surprised to hear only one *Marsh Wren*
during the entire field trip.
A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be
at Ankeny NWR on *Tuesday, June 20th at 7:00 a.m.* Meet at the Overlook
off of Ankeny Hill Road. Our next SAS Shorts bird walk will be at *Keizer
Rapids Park* on *Tuesday, June 27th at 9:00 a.m.* Meet in the far parking
lot near the boat ramp.
