*SAS Ankeny Scouting Trip Report*
Hello all -
Barbara, Fred, Kay and I scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for our Salem
Audubon birding field trip on *Saturday, July 23rd at 7:00 a.m.* The four
of us covered three locations around the refuge with most of the time spent
at Pintail Marsh. The weather was awesome as it was a wonderful summer
morning (59 degrees at the start and 70 degrees at the end). There was a
lot of activity at Pintail Marsh as we observed 46 species there alone.
During the scouting trip we identified 56 species.
Most notable identifications:
- The shorebirds at Pintail Marsh were amazing. We had *Greater
and Lesser Yellowlegs*, *Spotted*, *Western* and *Least Sandpipers,
Long-billed Dowitchers*, *Dunlin* and *Killdeer*;
- We saw eight (8) *American White Pelicans* at Pintail Marsh;
- There was an immature *Bald Eagle* at Pintail Marsh;
- We saw two *Belted Kingfishers* at Pintail Marsh just as we
arrived there;
- We heard a *Wilson’s Warbler* at the Rail Trail and heard
several *Yellow
Warblers* at two locations. We were very happy to actually see two female
and one male *Common Yellowthroats*;
- Saw *Lazuli Buntings* at the Overlook and at Pintail Marsh;
- We heard a *Willow Flycatcher* along the far east portion of Pintail
Marsh along the tree line. We clear heard its “fitz-bew” call.
A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be
at Ankeny NWR on *Saturday, July 23rd at 7:00 a.m.* Meet at the Overlook
off of Ankeny Hill Road. The next SAS Shorts is at Keizer Rapids Park on
*Wednesday*, *July 27, 2016* at *9:00 a.m.* Meet at the back parking lot
near the boat ramp. Please join us if you can.
*Note:* We have a special NightHawk watch at Minto-Brown Island Park on
July 21st at 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. Meet in parking lot #3.
