Eric: By struggling to expand the circle of things one loves, by struggling to keep an open mind, by opening a window, by taking a chance, by self-questioning, by seeing oneself as a character in a fiction of one's own devising, by giving the other guy a break, by empathy, by imagination, by learning how to listen, by reading fiction and poetry, by humility and the acceptance that other people know more than ones does, by refusing self-parody, by prayer or meditation, by looking at motivation first, by finding a way to enjoy the happiness of strangers, by paying attention .... just for starters.
