"In 2005, Anne Owers, Her Majesty's chief inspector of prisons, banned the flying of the English national flag in English prisons on the grounds that it shows the cross of St. George, which was used by the Crusaders and so is offensive to Muslims." Don't you just love all this mythologising. Anne Owers, indeed Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons, actually banned prison warders in Wakefield Prison from wearing Tie Pins with a St George's Cross on it. Her reason was the the pins might be misinterpreted as a racist symbol (The Cross of St George is the standard banner of the BNP). Of course, under the right wing magnefying glass of Steyn, this gets turned into a whole-scale banning of flag flying. Once again, Lawrence, find the reference to prove me wrong. Simon
