My question still stands if you get rid of all installations of liblouis and
then reinstall with the current release does it work. It still does not for me
and it seems like it doesn't seem to matter so I guess this is the last time I
will ask.

It works just fine with me here. I haven't set LOUIS_TABLEPATH and I removed
all the tables except those in /usr/local/share/liblouis/tables.
