Hi Dorothy, is it xp sp3 you're running on your desktop? Is it home or pro?
As far as the laptop goes, although I have my doubts and so does Andrew as to whether SFC will work using your toshiba recovery cd if it's reached the stage of kill or cure it can't do any harm to try. If you'd like to try it I'll remind you how. I'll put the command to be put in the run box just as it should be so copy and paste into the run box. First, put your recovery cd into your laptop. When the welcome screen comes up press alt f4 to close it. Then go to the start menu and to run. In the run box paste this
sfc /scannow
That's it. If it'll work it'll work and if it won't it won't, but it may be worth a try. It really sounds as if your computers are in a bit of a state. Incidentally, if it came to a format and reload is it possible to do without speech feedback?
                   John.

Hi Dorothy, there's no accounting for computers. Some days there may be
more processes running than on other days. Sometimes you may run resource
hungry applications and on other days, like today, you may have been
running less and so putting the system under less of a strain.
As far as defragging goes, as someone said just now you may well be ok
just running it every week or so. I don't think though that it's only
necessary when programs are removed. Fragmentation happens all the time.
Another thing to remember is that if you have a computer crash it's a good
idea to do some computer housekeeping, like a defrag and a chkdsk /f to
set things right again.
If you ever get in a fix and need someone to talk you through any of
these things you're welcome to give me a call. I'll send you my number
offlist if you'd like.
                   John.

Please John what is SFC? and please again arn't some cookies useful and I
am sure the idea of a daily Defrage will terrify some! unless computers
have changed alot. Finally I do have a lot on myDesktop System Tray and
some
may not be important, but can you tell me this and remember how this
thread
started.

Some days are "sludge days as I said other days like today my computers
laptop and desktop are tearing along at a great speed. Why is that? I have
altered nothing at all, do have a new Wireless Router since yesterday
Regards Dorothy

Hi everybody, another couple of tips that will help your computer to keep
running as it should.
Firstly don't let cookies build up. If left to bild up they will have an
effect on your computer's performance. Some of them can also be harmful.
Secondly do a defrag once a day. The less fragmented you let windows get
the better. It's an obvious thing, but it's amazing how many times I've
heard of people never defragmenting and wondering why they have errors,
and
why their computer runs increasingly slower.
Lastly for now SFC. If you get error messages it's a good idea to run
SFC,
just in case system files have been altered badly or corrupted.
To do this, put your windows cd in the drive. Shut down the welcome
screen
when it appears. Go to start and then run, and type:
sfc /scannow
You'll hear the cd power up. Windows will scan all its system files and
replace where necessary. Jaws still works during it, so don't be worried
about lack of speech feedback.
                   John.
