Ah, I think I could live with this.

If the options was one of:
   1) have the host map MIDI/OSC/whatever into GMPI API stuff
   2) send/receive raw MIDI bytes
   3) send/receive raw OSC bytes
   4+) send/receive raw whatever bytes

then it would remove a lot of my concerns. I still think its a bad idea
FWIW, but it would be easier to implement consitently.
