While that's true, it's not quite the same.  You could take a backup of an
early U60 51E and restore to a late 51E with a minor tweak to a few files to
account for the SCSI controllers being different.  I seem to remember the
51B and 51B1 as being backup/restore compatible, although I could be
mistaken.  The U30 51Es were a little more complicated to get to the
U60 51Es, but it could be done.  You could take a backup of any 51 station
and restore large chunks of it to any other 51 station, although it was
often easier to do a day0, commit and copy customs.  The very long service
life of each model Sparc and Ultra workstations made these changes
relatively unnecessary (however, I do hope to cycle the last of my 51As out
of service later this year, and maybe even my B's and C).
