If you perform the action used to apply the effect to a block of text in which that effect is used in places but not throughout, it will apply it to the /whole/ block. You can then perform the same action again to toggle the effect, i.e. to /remove/ it from the whole block. e.g. for the line of text 123456789, with 345 in italic and the rest in roman: i) Select all of 123456789 ii) ctrl-I to change all of 123456789 to italic iii) ctrl-I again to change all back to roman
