Another thing which was adding to my confusion was that, having set the scope of a new style to "Selection", if I then re-edited the style and made a change to the format (Modify>format), on saving the changes the scope would revert back to the default "paragraph" ... without me noticing. Is it possible to prevent it doing that?
That is actually a feature. The idea is that if you select a paragraph attribute for a style then it should apply to a paragraph.
I suppose the opposite behaviour might catch some people out e.g. set style to justify and then find that it only works on single lines.
