My problem was that anytime I made a mistake someone in my family would correct
me immediately, so I assumed that was what people did. It’s a tough habit to
break and I still do it occasionally. Few bosses appreciate my interjections of
‘John and I’ when they use ‘John and me’…

My mother used to set the matric exam English paper for the Western Cape.
My Dad used to walk around the house quoting Shakespeare.
I was ridiculously anal about stuff like grammar and spelling but the internet
made me realise everyone is stupid so I might was well wallow with them in
there ignorance.

It's a curse. That XKCD is spot on.
I have a similar trait that I got from Dad and his brothers who were or are
either in construction or engineering fields. At least one of my friends hate
me for it. They say because of me, the first thing they look at if they walk
into a place is if the tiling is straight and symmetrical, and if it's not they
can't stop looking at it.
If you want to annoy me, put me in a room with a skew painting/portrait that I
cannot reach.
