Do I tell my client to email the Wife¹s attorney directly?

I think that that's a pretty easy "No." Freewheeling round-robin e-mailing
will likely make this whole thing even worse.

I don't know what the other lawyer said to your client, but the lawyer needs
to figure out what it will take to restore some kind of working
relationship. Something like, "I spoke out of fear of what you could happen
to my client, and I acknowledge your equally well-founded fear of what could
happen to you."
