That's why it's important to make use of the comments feature. The validator should especially do this as she wlill have seen Bookshare's rating and has the opportunity to disagree and give her reasons why. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, September 21, 2007 3:49 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: books with less than excellent ratings Shelly, I think it is because many words in the books are either colloquial or have unusual spellings and are picked-up by Bookshare as scanos. For instance, many compound words are flagged as misspelled because the standard dictionary does not have the words as compound ones but as two separate ones. Also, often authors play around with words for effect, such as looooked instead of looked and the unusual spellings are not in the dictionary. This situation has happened to me a great deal and perhaps, that is why The Wind Dancer was rejected since I visually checked all of the flagged words and found them to be correct before I submitted the file. Who knows! Take heart, your books are in excellent shape despite the Bookshare ratings. Barbara "Shelley L. Especially if I did the same work on one book which was labeled excellent, and another book which was well, rated good, but with the same work, same settings, and same series of books. Smile, sometimes it is well out of the submitters hands it seems. Or so I would assume with Tornadoes Volcanoes Foxes Why Do rabbits Hop? The last four books I said were "excellent" read through and edited, but when I got the "congrats notice found them rated only good. Shelley L. I think E's idea is wonderful and hopefully the benefit would be that when poor submitters' books stayed on the step 1 list for a long time, said submitter would get the idea that unless he submits better scans, his books aren't going to be validated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pratik Patel" To: Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 10:25 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: books with less than excellent ratings > While volunteers do not know the identity of the siad Bookshare.org > Volunteer, the staff have the capability of finding out. through the > software. > > -----Original Message----- > From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jill O'Connell > Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 11:29 PM > To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: books with less than excellent ratings > > I really like that idea! > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "E." > To: > Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2007 6:35 PM > Subject: [bksvol-discuss] books with less than excellent ratings > > >> You may notice I notice that books with less than excellent ratings are >> listed sometimes as coming from "a bookshare volunteer". >> >> I respect the volunteer's need to remain anonymous though I frankly fail >> to quite understand the need.
