Actually I wasn't kidding. Maybe we should delete all the fair books. It would raise the quality of the collection certainly, and I haven't found any fair books that are classics. (If anyone knows of a classic book in fair condition, please let me know, I'll get it, validate it, and put in a better version of it.) It seems like there are a lot of complaints about the quality of the collection, especially of the fair books. In an ideal world, we should get copies of all of the fair books, scan and OCR them, validate them, and replace them. But I doubt that anyone is going to give Bookshare the thousands of dollars necessary to purchase the 1000+ books. As far as I can tell (and I may be wrong), very few fair books are being replaced which means that no one really cares about them. And if no one cares about them, let's delete them. I have another idea. Maybe Gustavo can see how many fair books have never been downloaded, or have been downloaded only a few times, and delete them. The books that have been downloaded more frequently, we can replace, since obviously people are interested in them. The question is: where do we draw the line between deletion and replacement? 10 downloads? 50? more? less? Before anyone gets too excited, I'm just musing here, putting up a flag and seeing if anyone salutes, playing the devil's advocate, that sort of thing. So don't panic. The fair books are still in the collection. Carrie Julie Morales <mercy421@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: I kind of wonder if maybe Carrie wasn't joking when she said delete them all? I don't know, but I really didn't take her seriously when she suggested deleting them all. Maybe my sense of humor is further out there than I thought it was and I should have taken her seriously, but I didn't. If they're in that category, then people will probably know what they are in for, and some may still get benefit from them. Also, certainly some people have a higher tolerance for quality problems than others. If it is a good Fair book, I may still tackle it; although if it is bad enough I may do a rescan. I am actually planning one in that category for the near future. (I'm waiting for my K1000 demo disc before I start.) But others without scanners may have a choice between reading something of lesser quality or not reading it at all. Why take that away from them if it is not necessary? Unless it is costing money to keep them, I don't see why they shouldn't be kept. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carrie Karnos To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 10:53 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: books with less than excellent ratings Yes, that's exactly what happened. The first books that started the collection were not validated well (probably not at all). Unfortunately a huge number of those books were science fiction, so the sci-fi category is in pretty bad shape. What does everyone think of deleting all of the fair books in the collection? The sci-fi category would take a large hit, but I don't think the other categories would suffer too much. I think the number of fair books is around 1200, out of the 27,000 (approx) books in the collection. Carrie Katie Star wrote: My opinion is... Maybe when bookshare started and when scanning software wasn't as good a fair book would have been acceptable. But with what we know can be done now, unless it was rare, maybe should be rejected. This could be something that bookshare can consider as they look at other suggestions put out this year. I mean, I know they're not textbooks. I know they may not be worth putting a lot of work in for some, but if they're worth putting on the site, they're worth making as good as you can make them, or at least that's how I feel. I happen to like those types of books and downloading books that are barely legible, and sometimes not even that, irritates me to no end!
