You certainly should be able to choose more than one language, and I
suspect that it not only helps with the spelling issues but also allows the
program to make better judgements about the correct letters. Of course it
is far more important for languages that use different letters or accent
marks. I really hate to come accross books that were scanned with no
regard to language. It is bad enough that they are damaged by braille
translation when they are put on bookshare if they are not either English
or Spanish.

If I leave the language as English, every Latin word will be flagged as misspelled, even though it's not. Of course, if I choose Latin, every English word will be flagged as misspelled. Can't win! I wish there was some way to say, there are 2 languages in this book, check that the word is in one language or the other before you flag it as misspelled. I assume that ABBYY is not that sophisticated yet.... or is it? Someone please tell me that that option already exists. :-)
I'll email you, Pratik, when the book is in the download queue, so you can validate it.
Thanks! Carrie

I'm curious, though--when I took first and second-year Latin in high school, the letters, i.e., fonts, were like English letters, unlike the non-romance languages I''ve seen. It was as easy to read the Latin (not translate, of course, until I'd learned) as the English. Why would Carrie have to change the recognition language on the scanner? Just curious.

Hello all!
I'll be happy to validate this little grammar text. Carrie, you will have to choose Latin as your recognition language with FineReader when you OCR this text. Please let me know when the text is up.

Pratik

Thanks, Carrie. Yes, breaking the spine and feeding in the pages is o.k. I told Lena to send the book to you at Benetech. Your address is a bit more detailed than the one that Geald gave me, so I'll send that to her.
Like Gerald, I'm not sure who would validate it. Hopefully Guido or Pratik, at least one of whom, if not both, are linguists. Perhaps after it's scanned,
if one of them is willing you could send the pages to them. If neither is, I mght give it a try. It would be a good review for me--after 56 years.
