I remember an early Summer camping trip near Big Lake, at an elevation of only 9000 feet. Man, it was "Arizona clear"; you could hold your finger in front of the sun, and it was just dark blue right to the limb! I eagerly awaited seeing the night sky, although I was without a scope. The sky must have been spectacular, but my eyes just couldn't shake an ever present "white noise" which made the summer Milky Way look bland. I wonder if another couple days at the high altitude would have helped. It would be interesting to get a report on the visual impressions of the SSSP from an experienced observer from the Southwest.
