Please update to the current Audacity 2.0.1:

To rip the CD, try using CDex:
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/  .

CDex has a shortcut F10 to "Extract a section of the CD". If you 
choose the entire length of the CD then CDex will rip it to one file. 

CDex will actually rip to MP3 but you may have to set the encoder
to "LAME" first (F4 to open Settings).   

If you want to edit the file in Audacity you should rip to WAV, not 
MP3.
