Hi Diane
Apologies for the long diatribe. Let us know if it causes confusion to
reign. For convenience, you may want to copy the four files you want into a
separate folder. If you can locate them easily, though, that is not
necessary.
I am going to give you two options. The first is what you asked for and the
second is, depending on your purpose, more convenient.
1. From Audacity's File Menu press I for import and press enter on
audio, which is the first option.
2. Select the first file you want (the order is important) and press
enter.
3. Repeat the process until you have imported the four files. Each
file will now be on a separate track and if you play you will get a jumbled
mess as they all play together.
4. With the enter key, deselect all tracks except the second.
5. Press j to make sure you are at the beginning of the track.
6. Press shift-k to select to the end of the track.
7. Press control-x to cut the material.
8. Press enter to deselect track 2.
9. Up arrow to track 1 and press enter to select it.
10. Press k to go to the end of the track.
11. Press control-v to paste the material you cut from track 2.
12. Repeat the process for the material on tracks 3 and 4.
Now for option 2. The process is the same up to and including step 3.
4. Make sure that all tracks are selected.
5. Select the Tracks Menu with alt-t.
6. Press a to align tracks. The first option is align end to end, so
you just need to press enter to do that.
What you now have is the four files still on their original track but tracks
2, 3 and 4 are moved so that the material is played in your desired order.
Especially if you want to export the material to - say - an mp3 file this
approach will work very well. But if you want to - say - edit material
jumping around the material may be initially confusing. To get to the start
of track 2, for example, you need to deselect track 1.
Whichever approach you use, labels (control-b) may well be your friend.
Setting labels at specific points and using alt-left/right arrow to move
between them is most handy.
