Hi Eleanor. I have my PC setup in the dining room with 2.1 speakers from Creative. They sound good with a 30 wot output. The trouble is it's always cold in there in the evenings despite the central heating. This is when I use my laptop. Plus it's much more comfortable sitting back on your sofa with the laptop. The desktop gets used a lot in the summer as it's nice and cool in the dining room. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eleanor Burke" <eleanorburke@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

You've got a fair point there Saqib because I would only invasage using mine out and about. At home I prefer to use my PC, not even necessarily a laptopunless two people are using computers. Personally I don't think the fan is loud. These machines are really meant to be used for short periods of time. A couple of hours is quite ok but if someone wants to keep a machine running longer then a traditional laptop would be a better option.----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Pearson" <carol.pearson29@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2008 4:28 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Netbook thread revisitedWe have an Advent 4211 and I don't consider the fan too loud. We haven'tused it for long periods at a stretch so I don't know either if it gets toohot, but we're pleased enough for what we paid and for the reason we needit. Mike is not a heavy user and just likes to keep up with his email and music, with occasional quick surfing, and he's happy. -- Carol carol.pearson29@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx----- Original Message ----- From: "Saqib" <saqib500@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 5:39 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Netbook thread revisitedHi James. Some people did report that the fan was a bit loud on the Advent 4211. I sometimes use my phone as a modem by USB connection. I get a decent connection and browsing speed. The Samsung netbook sounds nice and I will look into it in the new year.----- Original Message ----- From: "James Scholes" <james@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: "Jackie Cairns" <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 4:27 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Netbook thread revisitedHi Saqib, I didn't like the Advent because of the pour build quality and keyboard design. Also, the machine tended to get rather hot when using it. And by the way, I use a program called Joikuspot on my Nokia N95 which transmits my 3G internet from O2 from my phone as a WiFi signal. Ithen can connect to the internet anywhere on the netbook without havingto disable my phone by removing my Sim. What I mean by that is that somekeyboards are very flat, and the keys don't feel separated. Otherwise,I think the spec on the Advent and Samsung were identical. I think the Asuss was even smaller, which is fine if you want something really tiny. I would just recommend people go out there and have a feel of these machines before buying. While they are pretty much alike, there are some subtle differences on the keyboard and shape of the machine that might have a differing appeal. I think the Packard-Bell had a dual core processor, but I just didn't like it, and am not a fan of that brand anyway. That one has a simcard slot under the battery and you just insert a Three simcard in and use their broadband. This feature is useful for when out and about. No need to look for a wifi hotspot. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairns@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Cc: <bcab@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 9:14 AM Subject: [access-uk] Netbook thread revisitedHi AllApologies for cross-posting for those subscribed to both lists, but this topic has been covered on Access UK and BCAB recently.Having been very interested in the thread of Netbooks, I decided to have a wander round while on a couple of days leave last week, andhave now purchased the Samsung NC10. I looked at the Advent and Asussmachines, as well as a similar spec Packard-Bell and the Samsung. I chose the latter because I just liked the keyboard that little bit better. For those who use a Pac Mate qwerty, the keys on the Samsungare not unlike it, and I felt comfortable typing on it without feelingtoo cramped up for space.I've now installed JAWS, K1000 and Microsoft Office Professional 2003,and find it works a treat with these and other programs I have added and use regularly. In fact, it's a cracker! I particularly love itsportability, and bought a nice little bag that takes its mains chargerand has room for other items like an external drive or USB pen.For those interested in wanting to buy one of these machines, theSamsung NC10 comes with 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, WiFi and Bluetooth,Windows XP Home, has three USB ports, ethernet connection, microphone and headphone sockets, and a battery life purported to be around the 2.5 hour mark. They come in I believe blue, white and black, the latter being the choice I went for. They cost around £300.All the machines I looked at had very similar specifications, with a slight variation on the estimated battery life. For me - and this is very personal to the individual - the Samsung had just that bit nicer keyboard. So far, so brill!!Jackie Cairns Braille Support Adviser Email: Jackie.Cairns@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sight and Sound Technology Welton House North Wing Summerhouse Road Moulton Park Northampton NN3 6WD Telephone: 01604 798024 Fax: 01604 798090 Web: www.sightandsound.co.uk ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq ______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System.
