Sir,

All government schools in Kerala are provided with Wipro Notebook PCs
installed with SGL 3.2. Many of these schools have re-formated the PC to
make it dual booting with Microsoft Windows. In last two weeks, i could see
two such systems got in to trouble when doing so. The following precautions
may correct these issues.

   1.

Install windows first. To do that, enter BIOS setup by pressing F2 and
set the item *boot the system to *as windows. (This is very much
important, otherwise, the windows will be installed smoothly and boot as
usual but on installing SGL, it will also install but wont boot, will show a
message that “IDE is already running.”). Windows XP with SP2 may be used.
   2.

In some systems, on installing windows, if we are not creating partitions
on all the disc space available, but only create three or four windows
partitions and leave the rest of the disc as free space for SGL, it reported
that SGL does not detect the free space but detect the partitioned space
only. To avoid this, make windows partitions on the entire disc at the time
of windows installation. For installing SGL, delete the last drive and make
partitions for SGL. It is also reported that, in the case of undetected free
space, if we delete the last windows drive and set it as free space, then
the lost free space is also added to it automatically.
   3.

Then, to install SGL 3.2, again enter BIOS setup and set *boot the system
to* as Linux. On installing SGL 3.2, we need some boot parameters. A list
of parameters is available in the item 'help' in the boot menu. After
entering this menu, press F8. Now read the following tutorial from the web.

Some architectures use the kernel framebuffer to offer installation in a
number of languages. If framebuffer causes a problem on your system you can
disable the feature by the parameter *fb=false*. Problem symptoms are error
messages about bterm or bogl, a *blank or shuffled screen, or a freeze* *within
a few minutes after starting the install.* The *video=vga16:off* argument
may also be used to disable the kernel's use of the framebuffer. Such
problems have been reported on a Dell Inspiron with Mobile Radeon card.

In our case, write in the boot menu the following parameters for
   installation: install VGA=771 fb=false
   1. On installation, dont forget to set the resolution 1200x800 starred
when the resolutuon menu is prompted.
   2. After completing the installation, another package (പൊതിയെന്ന്
   ഡെബിയന്‍ ലെന്നിയുടെ പ്രസാധനക്കുറിപ്പില്‍-പക്ഷേ തയ്യാറിപ്പ് എന്നോ പാക്കേജ്
   എന്നു തന്നെയോ ആകുന്നതായിരുന്നു നല്ലത് എന്നു തോന്നുന്നു.) is to be
installed to correct the resolution problem. Here the manual has a minor
mistake in the first statement. Explore for the package given in the *dpkg
-i* command in the second statement and copy it to paste in the system.
Install it as narrated in it. Its done!

 2. Also i sow some schools keeping the printers distributed in this scheme
for windows only. When i asked about it, they said that there is no driver
for it in Linux. Thats true, there is no proper driver for them (Samsung ML
1640 and Epson LX?) in SGL. But these printers will work somehow with ML
1610 and Epson Dotmatrix drivers. This is simple and every one who read this
will know this, but many of our teachers wont. If Edn District has a news
group, please SMS this with proirity.

 3. Some weeks ago, we installed two canon printers -LBP 2900 and 2900B in
SGL. The installation was successful but with one problem. The file *
/etc/init.d/ccpd* which is supposed to start automatically on every restart
is not doing so. we have to run it on every restart which makes some
discomfort. Please tell us what we should do to make a file auto start on
every start and restart?

 4. For HP 1022 Laser jet, the driver in SGL 3.2 is not working, then we
tried foo2zjs which is the suggested driver. But the web installation fails
becouse of the need of gcc. Actually gcc 4.1 is installed in it. Will some
one kindly tell us which version of gcc is need to extrat foo2zjs source
from its web orgin? Do any one know the printer working in SGL 3.0 or 3.2? 5.
I have seen many Konica Minolta 1350 W, 1200 W printers in our schools. Many
experts in the net suggest Beetman's 1200W driver (
http://beetman.sweb.cz/)or Schiller's 1[234]xxW (
http://www.hinterbergen.de/mala/min12xxw/) for these printers. I installed
the schillers driver (i could see the binary min12xxw in /usr/share/local as
expected but no ppd in /usr/share/ppd). i tried it in my system which runs
on SGL 3.0. Could any one suggest what would have gone wrong -or what should
i do to connect it with this printer? But many people in the web report that
the same printers work fine in etch in their machines! Please see this and
help!-pradeep kumar mattara
