If your graphics card is intel, then you can the latest driver for
intel (965GM, 965GME, G33, Q35, Q33 and IGD_GM (pci ids 2A02, 2A12,
29C2, 29B2, 29D2 and 2A42)) based graphics card from
http://people.debian.org/~jcristau/etchnhalf/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.1-1~etchnhalf1_i386.deb
and reconfigure the xserver with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and
select the 1440x900 resolution.

yes. It was really a bad decision to go for proprietary software. FSF
India took the issue seriously and send its concerns to the Education
Minister. See the letter :

Hope he will consider this and from now onwards all E-governance
applications to schools will work on Free Software
