[School-GNU-Linux] SGL 3.0

sir,

1. There are two or more base system installation CDs are available to us
with kernel version 2.6.23. When i tried to install these CDs in 15 AMD
(Sempron) Machines, i observed the following

   -

The base installation was fine and complete without errors
   -

When i tried to complete the installation with SGL 3.0.1, aptitude failed
at about 70% of installation. (error 255). i treid two more SGL 3.0.1 CDs
but the result were the same.
   -

then i reinstalled the base using a base installation CD with kernel
version 2.6.21, i could successfully complete the installation with the same
   SGL 3.0.1 CD.
   -

when the boot menu of the installed version is observed, i saw the
version got installed is linux kernel 2.6.21-2-k7, but when the base CD with
kernel 2.6.23 was used, the kernel installed were linux kernel 2.6.23-1-686.
   -

All of these base, SGL CDs are successfully used many times in intel
   machines including mine (1013-2.6.23).

 2. Wide type LCD monitors are popular now a days. i myself using an acer
17' wide monitor. The resolution prescribed for this type monitor is 1440 x
900. i tried to set the resolution of my system to this by the
dpkg-reconfigure command, but it is not accepting that resolution and
therefore i get skewed images only with 1280 x 1024. when searched the web
for some wall papers fitting exactly for this screen, i saw debian wall
papers designed for 1440 x 900. Does this mean that the resolution is
applicable for debain systems and mine has some configuration missing? If it
is so, please suggest me what should i do for it?

 3. Last day i tried to install open office 3.0 beta in my system. The
installation seems complete (as i could see in synaptic package manager) but
no desktop icon or menu item has not been configured. What should i do to
configure it, atleast by a desktop launcher?

*If you experience OpenOffice.org startup problems (most notably while using
Gnome) please 'unset' the SESSION_MANAGER environment variable inside the
shell you use to start OpenOffice.org. This can be done by adding the line
"unset SESSION _MANAGER" to the beginning of the soffice shell script found
in the "[office folder]/program" directory.*

Please tell me where is this *[office folder]/program* directory? Is this
just indicates the illiteracy of we, master trainers, in the structure of
the file system and linux set ups. Please suggest us some web tutorials
through which we could get a grip on it.

 4. There are many package installation utilities in GNU/Linux like
synaptic, G debi, dpkg and aptitude. We are using synaptic and some times g
debi. But the last two, now i could see that they are some more frequent as
we move on, are quite unfamiliar with us. Here also, please suggest us some
web tutorials to do with them. Is sudo prefix is needed to dpkg for debian
systems other than ubuntu?

 5. Its about the platform we are using for the data entry for the single
window admission process. The government has taken the decision to make
GNU/Linux as its platform for the schools in kerala and we know that this
operating system is competant enough to deal with such a program. But when
it is launched, the OS selected is once again windows. As good old soldiers,
we accepted the decision and doing it as good as we can. For the next year
onwards, let us pray that the OS will be School GNU/Linux, with the DHSE
changed thier mind both in platform and sillubus for the students

 6. And finally, will we change to School GNU/Linux 4.0 after *Onam
celebrations *in september? We are eagerly waiting for that!
