[School-GNU-Linux] SGL 3.0

1. In the last mail, I committed two mistakes, one at ........*should revoke
*...... Sorry! I didn't meant it, but I meant *revive* -it was a *cafe haste
error*! Another one on quoting the web site for the disc spinning issue,
what should I quote was the site

www.linux-ata.org/shutdown.html. A vital memory error!

2. For getting Malayalam typing in open office, I had installed the
malayalam open office patch and all malayalam computing set ups that I got
from space ( from *insight, *when I came there for IED classes.), but I
could not get what I desired. I downloaded and installed Malayalam updated
patch from Support.space and the version upgraded, but nothing happened. I
un-installed all the malayalam computing tools, and then installed malayalam
patch only. Now I get some koottaksharangal ( ക്ക )and all chillaksharangal
( ന്‍ ) also. But composites like *dya (**ദ്യ **) *are still not getting in
it.

I had asked the community last time how to upgrade open office 2.0 to open
office 2.4 in our School GNU/Linux. I did it and it works some how, I don't
know whether it is the way that it should actually , but a net search gave
this procedure to do with. I know one thing that macros are not working when
it is installed because it lacks Java Runtime Environment. What I did
follows.

 Download *Ooo_2.4.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.tar* from some sites
of open office.

If you are a cafe-net-user like me, take home the down loaded package in
your thumb drive, Login your system as root, paste it in the root's home
directory.

Now un-install open office 2.0 from our system using synaptic package
manager.

 Extract the zipped package as

*Right click on the package-->extract here* option

We will get the extracted package *OOH680_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9286 *

(There are easy short cuts for extraction and installation, but not for us.)

Open the folder *OOH680_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9286 ,* the DEBS and
desktop integration sub folders. Install
openoffice.org-debian-menus_2.4-9268_all.deb
using G debi package manager. (The procedure above is not a standard one,
the correct way is actually included in this package but in my case that
installation failed. The open office installed, but menu not configured. I
tried to install the menu configuration package using G debi again, but then
that also failed. I un-installed all the packages once again and then
installed the configure menu package first, then continued all the other
steps- don't ask me to explain!)

Now take the root terminal and issue the commands

*#cd OOH680_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9286 *

*#cd DEBS*

*#sudo dpkg -i *.deb*

*#cd desk**

(We are repeating eh!)

*#sudo dpkg -i *.deb*

3.A problem is coming up when we try to install School GNU/Linux 3.0 in
systems with SATA HDD and CD drive (Both SATA). When hard disc is in SATA 0
and CD drive in SATA 1, the installer is not detecting CD drive. This
especially happens when we try to install our OS in a Laptop. Is there any
solution for this issue? Once I suggested to use an additional PATA CD
drive, to install, when a teacher asked me about it. He didn't call me back
again, but will there be any problems of drive recognition after
installation, when the IDE drive is removed?

4.Again about the system clock. It was still 5.30 hours ahead the BIOS
clock. But now I set it correct any how by assigning it to the Greenwich
mean time supposing that it will be 5.30 hours behind us! (For that we may
used the command tzconf in root terminal.) I don't know whether it will make
further problems.

5.Are there any simple to use BIOS up gradation/recovery utilities working
in GNU/Linux environment? Could we get detailed steps telling how to update
(and of course, how to recover if something went wrong!) using a boot
able *Compact
Disc.*

Can we make back ups of the present settings before we proceed to update and
can we resettle it if some thing went wrong? (Intel 945 GCNL mother board.)
