If you properly follow the instructions at http://malayalam.web4all.in
you should get malayalam in openoffice 2.0.4 (ie the version included
in the IT@School GNU/linux) You have to use the fonts Rachana, Meera
or Suruma not the rachana_oo2 or rachana_w01 etc.

I'm using a system with sata hdd and sata cd drive and IT@School got
installed smoothly. Did you tried the base system with 2.6.21 kernel?

Did you checked the UTC option in the Clock preference (it is in the
right click menu on the panel clock)?
