Sir,
Configuring malayalam in my system's office was a desperate case for me for
a long time. i was unable to write composites like വ്യ in open office
applications (for which i was getting വയ് instead). i was ready to do any
thing that was suggested as a solution. It is done at last, but don't ask me
how! i installed any thing starting with ml (like open
office.org-|10n-ml-in) - and ml-debian-patch of course!
Now i have some other issues. A CD with malayalam software tools is supplied
to all our government offices including DEOs and i got a copy of it from
wandoor DEO. The CD contains many malayalam Unicode complaint open type
fonts designed for linux systems. The suggested installation procedure and
difficulties that i faced are as follows. Please tell me what should i do
instead. The details are for newbies like me and those kind hearts who
respond me, ignore these dual edges, please!
1.Download Fonts.tar.gz from the CD and keep it in the 'Download' folder in
Desktop.(If any of us want the Font.tar.gz and dependencies, please send me
a mail.)
Done
2. Open a terminal and cd to that directory by issuing $cd Desktop/Download/
uncompress Fonts.tar.gz to get a folder 'Fonts' containing the new fonts.
For that issue $tar -zxvf Fonts.tar.gz
Done.
But no 'Fonts' directory. The fonts extracted were found scattered in the
'Download' folder. i made that folder and transferred the fonts to it.
3. cd to 'Fonts' by $ cd ./Fonts Issue su -m to get super user status.
Done
4. Create a folder named otfonts in /usr/share/fonts/
For that we can issue the command
#mkdir /usr/share/fonts/otfonts
Done
5. Copy all the fonts to this directory. For that issue the command
#cp *.ttf /usr/share/fonts/otfonts/
Done
6. cd to the directory /usr/share/fonts/otfonts For that issue
#cd /usr/share/fonts/otfonts
Done
7. Create a file called fonts.scale listing available true type fonts in the
directory. For that issue
#ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale
Here onwards, the actual problems came in. There is no ttmkfdir utility
installed in SGL 3.0. Any how, that's Okey! i got it and installed.
8. Add the path to X font serve path by
#chkfontpath –add /usr/share/fonts/otfonts/ then issue #fc-cache
Oh! There goes it down! This command works only on Redhat. But i have drawn
her hand and have taken seven* steps, *i am not able leave her now. Please
help me. Will the utility xset help me? As i could see, these fonts are not
space conscious since they are getting jammed on one another. (i saw it when
i just pasted them in the existing true type malayalam fonts directory) is
it a configuration mistake or a mistake of the fonts themselves?
