I bought a 3.5E a few years ago at a flea market in NYC. I noticed after I got it home that the front panel had some play in it and it also did not advance evenly at first. I have not had any problems with focusing ( although I rarely shoot wide open). My camera is in user condition so asthetics are not important. The camera takes great photos and that's all I want

Someone on the "other" Rollei list has been writing about the same problem. I think the problem originates at the focusing cams. The whole front is moved by a pair of Y shaped brackets which, in turn, are moved by cams on each side of the camera. The cam followers are spring loaded plungers. If the cam followers get sticky or if the wrong lubricant is used on the cams, the front will wobble when the camera is focused. I suggested just wiggling the front to see if it would loosen the cam followers. I don't know if this will work. The real solution is to get the camera CLA'd by someone who knows how to service the focus mechanism. The focus side is pretty easy to get at, you can even see the cam by taking off the focus knob, but on the wind side the cam is under the wind mechanism. I think you could probably get lubricant on it without disassembling the winder but I am not sure. In any case, its a job for a pro.
The lubricant should be fairly thick grease. Light grease, like Lubriplate, will not do. The focus should have some resistance so that the front will not move from gravity or by pushing on it. Some of that resistance comes from the viscosity of the grease and some from correct adjustment of the pressure spring in the cam followers. My guess is that the lubricant has dried out.
