400 mfd electrolytics with radial leads. Wrap the leads back over the body not touching kind of making a barber poll out of it. 200volt supply on the bench and when the new kid comes in the door you pick it up by one end and holler catch as you pitch it to him.

You learned to duck and cover really quick instead of catching ;-)
How did we survive anyway???

BTW, do be careful when mucking about with power packs. if something shorts out on a fully charged pack, it can knock a person off their feet or worse.

If they're really old school electronics, (nothing really hi tech), and you have access to an old variac, you could put a low voltage against them for a few hours. Say less than 20 VAC in, to let the caps reform, Then ramp up the input voltage to see how they react.

I'll bet they're dried out however.

Getting hot. Yea, when they let go you get nasty goo all over everything inside, I've never seen one explode, but the stuff is corrosive, not as bad as a dry cell, but still not so good for the health of the wiring.
