OK, I'm looking at it, open, with the counter window on the right, and the side film goes into on the left. I'm not sure what I'm looking for that should be protruding. Will it be on the left or right, top or bottom? I see the little things that click when it's closed, both on the body and door. Is it one of those?

When this happens the counter is reset.Open the back and in god light look in the area where the light seals reside. Sometimes the light seals get gummy with age and prevent the tab from protruding and actuating counter reset.
