I'm curious why on windows you are using mono instead of .net? Mono is way behind .net, and .net is native on windows.

I was absolutely referring to the Mono Dev environment with JAWS. I installed it, and I couldn't even touch the menu bar, never mind actually being able to create a project with it. I'll try it again and then give you more details.

As per http://www.mono-project.com/Supported_Platforms there is a Windows port of Mono, that might be what she's referring to.On 5/16/2011 10:15 PM, Sina Bahram wrote:

You mean the .net development environment on windows? That actually works kind of amazingly well with Jaws. What exactly are you referring to?

And with regards to how Orca will handle that. Hmm, that's an interesting one. I would have to do some research into that. I don't think Mono is expressed via ATK, so I'm not sure it will read with Orca.

Take care,

Sina

Okay. Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure about that. But one thing I know is that Open Suse has the Mono Framework in it by default, and accessibility wise, on windows, it doesn't really work too well in terms of the dev environment, but how about accessibility with GTK# on linux?

Katherine,

KDE is making some strong steps towards accessibility, but is hardly there yet. I wouldn't bother at this time.

You could try it, gnome would be sluggish for you unless you have plenty of memory to spare, but I'm not sure. My problems may just be a Vinux issue though, because I ran a windows XP vm for testing for a while on the same system with the same amount of memory. I have not had the time to sit down and configure Linux+orca and gnome to see if it is in fact a Vinux issue though.

This would be to explore both CLI and KDE or Gnome on Open Suse 11. Do you still think it's a good idea?

If you're using cli, these friends don't know what they're talking about--virtual instances are just fine. Hell, there are enterprize level sites ran out of the cloud, which is *gasp* virtual. My servers are virtual instances on big boxes with tons and tons of ram, and they run perfectly. Now, if you want a GUI... At least for Vinux, virtual does "blow," because it's slow, laggy and painfully slow.

Speaking of virtual, and sorry to get off topic, but I'm curious. I plan to run a virtual instance of Open Suse from Novell on my laptop using VMware player starting this summer. I want to get acquainted with the Unix environment just for the heck of it, but two of my friends say that virtual instances of any Linux distro don't work very well and that they "blow". What do you have to say about that? Do you agree or disagree? I ask because I want this to be a cool experience rather than a waste of my time. Thanks.

Hi Storm,

Very cool. What does someone need to take the class? I have Vinux Virtual on my machine at home.

Hi,
It looks good. The only thing is, although you mension the Vinux Project you do not make it a link. It should link to:
http://www.vinuxproject.org/
Also, if you would like another bash resource I have been teaching a class in a new Vinux experiment called Vinux Classes. It's an irc chat room set up specifically for teaching Vinux related classes. All the classes are logged and are located at:
http://classroom.vinuxproject.org/
Thanks
Storm

Hi,

I took the liberty to add the information Don provided about Bash scripting to http://www.nonvisualdevelopment.org./content/what-programming-languages-are-most-useful-linux. Would someone please check this page for accuracy?

Thanks.
